Business in China II:Travel

Last week we introduced you to China. Following the series, this week we are going to talk about travelling to China.

After China adopted the policy of Capitalist-Communism in the 1980s, the number of foreigners visiting the nation has seen dramatic increase. Rise of China as a preferred location for outsourcing manufacturing and service jobs towards mid 1990s has added to this trend. Now China is a major tourist attraction. Thousands travel to the nation every year, from Americans to Europeans. There has been a rise in number of tourists from neighboring countries too.

The best time of the year to visit cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Xian is May, June, September and October. Off-season travelers enjoy some discounts and more personal attention as there are few visitors during that time. But before you decide please check with your travel agent because sometimes the whether conditions may not favorable, especially during the winter.

Air China, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Japan Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Korean Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines offer flights to China from major US cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. For fare and other information, please visit their website. From the West Coast, it is a 14 hour flight to Hong Kong.

To apply for tourist visa, you can contact the nearest Chinese consulate or the embassy at Washington DC. For the location and contact information on the consulates, please visit this link . To get a visa one needs passport valid for more than 6 months from the departure date. To travel to Tibet and other restricted areas, you need a special travel permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Administration. In China, you can find international chain hotels like the Hyatt, Holiday Inn along with the local names. They are rated according to the international rating standards, but are typically cheaper than in USA or elsewhere in North America. Private bathrooms, TV, air conditioning, long distance call facility are some of the common amenities available at the star hotels.
