Back in Nepal, the Soviet government used to sponsor children of writers, scientists who were not so strong financially to study medicine, engineering in the Soviet Union. At present there are many "opinion formers" is Nepal who are Russian educated.
After the fall of Soviet Union, that kind of sponsorhsip ended. But still hundereds of Nepalese students go to Russia annually to study on scholorships and reduced fees scheme. The Russian cultural center is very active in the capital Kathmandu.
With all this, people of Nepal have always regarded Russia as a friend, not only in a political way but also because of the people to people relation we have. In today's world, this kind of cultural closeness is gaining importance as polititcs is getting more and more divisive.
